Recycling and Sustainability at Handy Landscapers

Team members sorting green waste on-site for recyclingAt Handy Landscapers we take a practical, measurable approach to environmental responsibility. Our recycling and sustainability policy is built around reducing waste, increasing reuse and ensuring that landscape materials are handled in the most environmentally sound way possible. From garden clearances to routine maintenance, every project is an opportunity to divert materials from landfill and support local reuse schemes. As a community-minded landscaping team, Handy Landscaping commits to transparent, accountable targets and ongoing improvements to reduce our carbon footprint.

Our Recycling Percentage Target

We have set a company-wide target to recycle or reuse at least 85% of all green and inert materials recovered from sites by 2028. This recycling percentage target covers woody debris, green waste, topsoil suitable for reuse, stone and brick that can be repurposed, and materials that can be donated to charitable projects. The 85% target focuses on diverting organic and reusable construction-related landscaping waste away from landfill and into composting, mulching, crushing and redistribution streams. Meeting this target requires careful on-site separation, efficient transport and trusted partnerships with local processing facilities.

Handy Landscapers truck loading separated garden waste into containersHandy Landscapers (also referred to as Handy Landscaper in some project notes) monitors performance monthly and publishes an annual sustainability snapshot that includes percentages for composting, material reuse and energy use. We use both in-house reporting and third-party verification for larger clearance projects to ensure our recycling metrics are robust and reliable.

We work closely with local transfer stations and civic amenity sites to keep materials moving into the right channels. Where appropriate we use borough transfer depots and civic amenity sites that accept garden waste, clean soil and inert rubble for processing. In many boroughs—for example boroughs such as Camden, Hackney and Lambeth—local councils operate clear separation systems for green waste, food waste and dry recyclables; Handy Landscaping aligns our site sorting with those borough-level systems so that collected materials match municipal recycling streams and processing rules.

Electric van from the fleet parked near a composting facilityOur logistics strategy relies on trusted transfer stations and composting facilities within a reasonable radius of job sites to minimize haul distances. Using nearby civic amenity sites and licensed transfer stations reduces vehicle miles and speeds the turnaround from collection to processing. For materials that cannot be processed locally we coordinate with regional processors who accept specialist streams such as inert aggregates, clean rubble for crusher plants, and certified composting facilities for woody and green matter.

Partnerships with charities and community projects are central to our reuse approach. We regularly work with local social enterprises and redistribution charities to donate usable plants, surplus paving, sleepers and clean soil where appropriate. This collaborative model means that healthy shrubs and reusable stone find second lives in community gardens, school growing beds and urban greening projects. Handy Landscapers also partners with workforce training organisations to provide materials and real-world project experience for trainees.

To reduce operational emissions, our fleet strategy prioritises low-carbon vans and efficient routing. We are transitioning to a mixed fleet that includes electric vans and low-emission hybrid models, with the goal to have at least 60% of our vehicles low-carbon by 2027. Combining electric and low-emission vans with route optimisation decreases fuel consumption and lowers particulate emissions in urban areas. In addition to vehicle upgrades, we adopt lighter load strategies and modular trailer systems to avoid unnecessary trips and maximise each journey's load of recyclable material.

On-site separation is simple but disciplined. Our teams separate materials into clearly marked skips or sacks for:

  • green waste for composting or mulching,
  • clean wood for chipping and biomass reuse,
  • soil and turf for screening and reuse,
  • stone, brick and concrete for crushing and reuse, and
  • non-recyclables handled as a last resort and processed through appropriate licensed waste transfer routes.
These procedures help us approach and surpass our stated recycling percentage target by ensuring clean material streams and reducing cross-contamination.

Volunteers and charity partners collecting donated plants and materialsCommunity reuse remains a priority: our teams coordinate on-site handovers when plants or reclaimed materials match charity requirements, and we offer scheduling flexibility so local groups can collect donations directly. We also run periodic material drives, where surplus topsoil and mulch are offered to community greenspaces and tree-planting initiatives rather than entering the waste stream.

Commitment to continual improvement

Handy Landscapers promises ongoing review of our sustainability practice. We continuously evaluate new composting technologies, look for certified low-carbon vehicle options and expand our network of borough transfer stations and community partners. By combining measurable recycling targets, smart use of transfer stations, active charity partnerships and a fleet of low-carbon vans, Handy Landscaping strives to be a leader in sustainable grounds maintenance and landscaping.
